DAMAC Properties is a Dubai-based global real estate development firm that was founded by entrepreneur Hussain Sajwani. He is the chairman of the board and the chief executive officer of this business which he started in 2002. It was the second company he has founded with his first one, a catering venture, having been started by him in 1982. His catering company is still going strong, with over 200 projects where more than 150,000 meals are served each day.
Hussain Sajwani is a graduate of the University of Washington. While he was in school he sold time-share apartments for his income. When he graduated with two degrees, one in economics and the other in industrial engineering, he moved back to the United Arab Emirate. When he started his catering business a few years later he used the money he had earned in his college job to get it off the ground.
In 2002 he spotted a market opportunity in the real estate market which is why he founded DAMAC Properties. His company is one of the largest in the Middle East with property developments in many cities like Riyadh, Amman, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and of course Dubai. He recently started expanding into Europe with his first property located in London. Additionally, he is an investor who has put money into global capital and equity markets.
Hussain Sajwani says that how he decides where and what to build lies in his thinking about the city he wants to develop in and what it will be like 10 to 20 years down the road. He says that he is a calculated risk taker who sets aside fear of failure. He says that when he wants to make something happen he puts in an enormous amount of work to make it do so.
Digital marketing and social media are two things that Hussain Sajwani says he finds to be very intriguing. He has moved much of his company’s marketing in this direction as that is where most eyeballs are nowadays. He also likes that these facilitate communication between consumers and a brand as well as with government officials.
