The Chainsmokers have quickly become one of the most increasingly popular musical artists of this decade but how did it all begin for the DJ and production duo? Alex Pall recently sat down with Mathias Rosenzweig to discuss their origins, fame and what’s next for them in their careers. Alex Pall was a DJ when he was growing up but it wasn’t until he met Andrew Taggart that his music began reaching a wider audience as well as achieving widespread critical acclaim. They started working together in 2012 but it wasn’t until 2013 that they were first thrust into the public spotlight with their first hit single, Selfie. Upon meeting, they realized how much each other loves EDM and DJ-ing and they’ve been working together on a daily basis ever since.
Alex Pall discussed how it’s important to release their songs in intervals because it can take some time for an artist’s music to permeate the cultural zeitgeist. He also discussed how they sing on their own songs. Though it’s not commonplace for DJ’s to do so, he believes it’s very important for them to make their voices heard, especially as it pertains to the topics mentioned in the song. Songs should be very personal and realistic, he said, and that’s why we make no apologies for providing their own vocals on these tracks. When discussing their collaboration with Halsey, he lauded her, noting that she’s a unique and cool artist who’s not afraid to be individualistic. He also discussed the group’s ever-expanding fanbase.
What used to be a fanbase of just college-aged kids has expanded into an all-ages demographic and they are truly grateful for everyone who loves and listens to their music. He then discussed how their live performances have and will continue to evolve over time. He believes in the importance of changing and growing as the music scene evolves. He also takes great pride in signing their songs live rather than lip syncing as some artists tend to do. So we wish them the best of luck in their careers and hope their future is a bright one.
